MUFON UFO Database: Access, Reports and Evidence Limits
Understand what the Case Management System contains and why a case number is not an independently verified identification.

Quick answer
MUFON is the Mutual UFO Network, a civilian organization whose history dates its founding to 31 May 1969. Its Case Management System holds witness-submitted cases and associated material. Access to some CMS content is a paid-member privilege under its posted terms; public discussion of a case does not make its photos freely reusable.
Key points
- Locate the original case and access conditions.
- Separate testimony, investigation and conclusion.
- Check permission before reproducing media.

What MUFON and CMS are
The organization’s history distinguishes its founding, investigator training and the development of the computerized CMS in the 2000s. Those are organizational milestones, not findings about any one sighting. When following a “MUFON report” search, first decide whether the result is a witness submission, an investigator’s report, a journal article or a later television account. They have different authors and evidentiary roles.
Access is not a republication licence
The posted CMS terms reserve certain narratives, photos, videos and attachments to active members and require written consent for redistribution. We reviewed those public terms without entering the protected database or accepting an agreement. Link to an authorized public source for a case; do not copy a member’s download or a witness’s contact details into an open archive. A subscription would not automatically confer commercial publishing rights.
A useful citation distinguishes evidence layers
Keep the case identifier, observation date, submission date, place and the specific document consulted. Attribute a statement to the witness or investigator who made it. Ask what conventional explanations were checked and which original data survive. Multiple articles repeating one CMS narrative still trace to one account; an “unknown” status does not itself identify a technology or establish a physical object’s extraordinary performance.
Do not compare database totals as encounter rates
Sky Canada discusses MUFON Canada in a wider landscape of civilian and government reporting and notes gaps in sharing between collections. A database total depends on participation, access and collection rules. The same observation can reach several organizations, while other witnesses never report. Comparing MUFON and NUFORC requires overlapping dates and deduplication; adding their totals cannot produce the number of distinct extraordinary events.
FAQ
Is MUFON a government agency?
No. It is a civilian UFO organization. A case’s submission to MUFON does not turn it into a government finding or an independently confirmed observation.
