19901990 Greifswald LightsOn 24 August 1990, witnesses around Greifswald and the southern Baltic coast recorded groups of bright orange-yellow lights that appeared nearly stationary, faded one by one and were followed by similar formations elsewhere. The surviving videos are real records of the public display, but no complete military event file has been published. A detailed 2012 reconstruction found that seven-candle parachute illumination devices used in Air Firing Zone II east of Rügen match the number, duration, slow descent and sequential extinction visible in the footage. Later broadcaster appeals also produced local recognition of the lights as a familiar range phenomenon. That makes military illumination flares the strongest explanation for the display.
